The detail worth carrying out of this test is that Britain's maps were made by the army, for artillery, after troops got lost in Scotland. The word "Ordnance" in Ordnance Survey means guns. Passage 1 also contains one of the quieter examples of how a technical project can change a country: surveyors in Ireland recorded place names in anglicised spellings, and because the maps became the official record, those spellings replaced the originals.
Passage 2 argues that recycling is the environmental action people rank highest and that achieves least. If that irritates you, read it twice — the argument is more careful than the summary sounds.
