Part 4 of this test is about the invention of standard time, and it is the reason we wrote it. It is a topic candidates have almost no vocabulary preparation for, which is exactly the situation you face on exam day — the real test does not choose familiar subjects.

About this test

Four parts, 40 questions. A telephone call about renting self-storage; a briefing to new allotment holders; two students planning a study of supermarket food waste; and a lecture on how railways forced the invention of standard time. Common questions

Is this a real IELTS test?

It is an original practice test written to the same format, question types and timing as the official IELTS listening paper. It is not a past paper.

How long should it take?

Allow 30 minutes + 10 to transfer, the same as the real exam. Practising under time pressure is most of the value.

Do I get the answers?

Yes. All 40 answers are shown as soon as you finish, along with a breakdown of which kind of mistake cost you marks.

Do I need an account?

You can take this test for free. An account lets you save your results and track progress.
